What the photographs do not show

Scale, and sound. The wall is five kilometres wide and stands as high as a twenty-storey building above the water, and no lens conveys that from the balconies. The noise comes first: a crack like thunder from deep inside the ice, then a pause, then the block hits the lake.

Light changes everything here. Overcast days deepen the blue in the ice; hard sun flattens it. Morning brings the calmer air and the fewest people on the central circuit.
